The film kicks off when sworn enemies, Boetie (Schuster) and Beast, played by Kenneth Nkosi (Jerusalema, Tsotsi, White Wedding), are forced to embark on a road trip as unwitting subjects of a new TV reality show devised by a gorgeous TV Producer, Kelsey, played by Tanit Phoenix (Spud, Straight Outta Benoni). On camera, with the whole of South Africa in on the joke, the pair comes unstuck at every stage of this hilarious journey until they discover that they have been conned and join forces to exact revenge.
But fear not Schuster fans, that last line tells me the movie won't stray too far from his depressingly successful formula. No-one out-candids Leon Schuster.
Now I could pre-judge the shit out of this movie based solely on that synopsis and my Schuster-induced cultural despair, but I like to pretend I'm a fair person. So, swallowing my bile, I decided to add to Schuster's pageviews and watch the trailer.
I admit, I did laugh at the trailer albeit the uncomfortable laughter of one staring into a vortex of comedy. It's a child beauty pageant kind of laughter. It's I've-just-seen-a-woman-breastfeed-a-cat kind of laughter. It's the kind of laugh that lives at the intersection of pity, disgust, alienation and absurdity.
Do you want to hear a joke? Leon Schuster movies make up four of the ten top-grossing movies of all time in South Africa. He's been making the same terrible movie with the same terrible jokes for years and people lap it up and love it. We are watching the cultural equivalent of a baby shitting his pants and applauding him when he does.
And somehow I'm still not over it. My carefully cultivated facade of jadedness crumbles when faced with the truth of this.
If you're into self-abuse, Mad Buddies opens 22 June 2012.
